Hamilton Music Archives launches Friday May 3

Hamilton, Ontario – May 1, 2019 – The Hamilton Music Archives officially launches Friday May 3 at 1pm, at the Central Library. The Archives include diverse collections that illustrate the 100+ year history of Hamilton’s music scene and its contributors, spanning many genres of music.

“We are honoured to showcase such special collections that document the evolution of music in Hamilton and will build on it so that it serves as a resource for generations to come,” says Paul Takala, HPL Chief Librarian and CEO.

Hamilton has long been known for its rich musical legacy, as well as its vibrant and thriving music scene.

The day kicks off with a special Noon Hour Concert featuring the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra Horn Duo, followed by the official launch reception. Local musicians, Erika Pavkovic and Darcy Mitchison will also entertain guests. The Archives includes collections from Opera Hamilton, Hamilton Savoyard Operatic Society, Royal Hamilton College of Music, September Seventh Entertainment Ltd., Hamilton Opera Company, Hamilton Musical Arts Society and the Royal Court Entertainers.

The launch concludes with a screening of the musical documentary, Rush Time Machine 2011: Live in Cleveland.

HPL has been working closely with the Hamilton Music Advisory Team to strengthen the city’s overall music strategy. These Archives contribute to our growing appreciation of music.

“The Hamilton Music Advisory Team is excited the Hamilton Music Archives will be preserved and celebrated by the Hamilton Public Library.   It gives the community access to unique collections of music, documents and artifacts from years past,” says Mark Furukawa, owner of Dr. Disc, and Chair of the Advisory team.

The Spectator’s music editor Graham Rockingham will also be a special guest speaker at the launch on May 3. He’ll talk about music industry’s ever-changing landscape in the city and what’s to come.

“The new Hamilton Music Archives is a community resource that we are proud to add to our growing collections at HPL. It is full of Hamilton’s rich music history and will surely be cherished. We invite others to contribute to the Archives to ensure it paints a full picture of Hamilton and its revered musical past,” says, Karen Milligan, Manager of Local History & Archives at HPL.

The Hamilton Music Archives will be located in Local History & Archives on the 3rd Floor of the Central Library.
